Death by Footnote

Updated: Dec 10, 2020

There are very few things that I dislike about academic life but keeping reference lists when I write articles is one of them. Having to do the nit-picky housekeeping of a numbered list, that cross references to numbers in a text*, irritates me.

While I don’t like the list making, I do love the reading and the citing. My academic articles are full of them, and it is always a tiny source of pleasure if I am allowed to squeeze in a footnote or two. But an article full of references and footnotes isn’t a light and easy read.

I made the decision not to footnote or reference the writing on this website, not because I dislike it, but because it makes the reading slow and drudgy. I want this website to be fun! I want people to love this work as much as I do!

So, instead, I have started a book list on the site which should allow you to find more detailed information if you are so inclined. It should give you some idea of where we source our information and the basis for our statements and conclusions

The Paintings and Books page can be found under the Lady Coventry menu tab.

* Yes, I know there are programs that are supposed to do this for you. I’ve tried several of them. I don’t like them either.
